Although depression can cause feelings of sadness, loneliness, and disinterest in daily living, depression is different from sadness and loneliness because depression can cause emotional and physical problems making it difficult for people to live functional lives. Typically, these feelings and challenges must be present for at least two consecutive weeks to be considered depression.

Common Symptoms Include:

  • Chronic sadness and/or a down mood
  • Loss of interest and/or pleasures in activities you once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite in either direction (weight loss or weight gain)
  • Irregular sleeping patterns
  • Loss of energy and/or increased fatigue
  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, and/or shame
  • Inability to concentrate and/or make decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
